Privacy Policy - Historical Events Research Assistant (Chrome Extension) Last updated: March 7, 2026

1. Overview The Historical Events Research Assistant ("the Extension") is a browser extension that helps researchers capture URLs, highlighted text, and video timecodes from web pages and save them to the Historical Events Database. This privacy policy explains what data the Extension collects, how it is used, and how it is stored.

2. Data We Collect The Extension collects data only when you actively use its features:

  • Account Credentials: Your username and password are used to authenticate against our database. We do not collect email addresses through the extension.

  • Research Session Data:

    • Browsing trail: When you start a research session, the Extension records the URLs and page titles of pages you visit. This tracking only occurs while a session is active and can be paused or stopped at any time.

    • Captured items: When you highlight text and click "Save to DB", the Extension saves the selected text, the page URL, page title, and site favicon URL.

    • Video data: On video pages (YouTube, Vimeo), the Extension may capture video timecodes and screenshot frames when you explicitly use the video capture feature.

  • Local Storage: The Extension uses Chrome's local storage API to persist your login session, active research session state, trail data, captured items, and the capture toggle preference. This data is stored locally on your device.

3. Data We Do NOT Collect

  • We do not collect browsing history outside of active research sessions

  • We do not collect personal information such as name, email, phone number, or physical address through the extension

  • We do not collect financial or payment information

  • We do not use cookies or tracking pixels

  • We do not collect health, authentication, or communication data

  • We do not sell, trade, or transfer your data to third parties

  • We do not use your data for advertising or marketing purposes

4. How We Use Your Data All collected data is used solely to provide the Extension's core functionality:

  • Authentication: To verify your identity and log you into the Historical Events Database

  • Research tracking: To record your browsing trail during active research sessions

  • Content capture: To save text selections, URLs, and video frames to the database

  • Session history: To let you review and continue past research sessions

5. Data Storage and Security

  • Locally on your device: Active session data is stored using Chrome's storage API and remains on your machine until you end the session or log out.

  • Supabase cloud database: When you save items or end a session, data is transmitted over HTTPS to our Supabase-hosted PostgreSQL database. Supabase provides encryption at rest and in transit.

  • All data transmission occurs over encrypted HTTPS connections.

6. Data Retention and Deletion

  • Local data: Cleared when you log out or uninstall the extension.

  • Cloud data: Research sessions and saved events remain in the database until you delete them through the web application.

  • Account deletion: Contact us to request full account and data deletion.

7. Permissions Explained

  • storage: To save login session, preferences, and research data locally.

  • tabs: To read the current tab's URL and title for trail and capture features.

  • webNavigation: To detect page navigation for research trail tracking.

  • activeTab: To interact with the current page for capture features.

  • contextMenus: To add right-click "Save to Historical Events DB" options.

  • Host permissions (all URLs): The Extension needs access to all URLs because its core features — text selection capture, research trail tracking, and the "Save to DB" popup — must work on any website the researcher visits.

8. Third-Party Services

  • Supabase (database hosting) — stores user accounts, research sessions, and saved events.

  • Render (backend API hosting) — processes AI analysis requests.

  • We do not share your data with any other third parties.

9. Your Rights

  • Stop trail tracking at any time by pausing or ending your research session.

  • Disable the capture popup using the pause/play toggle.

  • Delete captured items from the extension or web application.

  • Delete your account and data by contacting us.

  • Uninstall the extension at any time, which removes all locally stored data.

10. Children's Privacy The Extension is not intended for use by children under the age of 13.

11. Changes to This Policy We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date.
